Mak Man Kee Wonton Noodles

There are MANY wonton noodle "restaurants" in HK.  They are usually narrow with very uncomfortable seating.  You definitely want to rinse and wipe down your eating utensils.  I try not to think about it when I take a sip of water from the plastic cups.  But okay, enough about how much of a freak I am...I guess I should be grateful the roof is not a makeshift one?

This particular one is different because it is the one and only one in HK.  Other establishments have basically expanded and are all over HK.  I'm told the original owners, the Mak family (I know, if only we were related), started with one wonton noodle shop.  Internal family fights split up the family and each sibling opened his own, but using the same last name Mak.  Only distinguishing part is what comes after Mak.  This one is Mak Man Kee.  There are Mak An Kee, Mak Siu Kee, Mak Kee, etc.

Mak Man Kee is my family's favorite.  It's a simple menu.  Served quickly and in plastic dishes.  Four wontons and noodles.  Its braised beef is also really really good.  The food here is actually quite pricey compared to other shops but you come for the quality, not quantity.  Which is why you head on over next door to Australian Dairy Company afterwards...lol

High tea: Cafe Gray

I really wanted to like this.  Because it's comfortable and noise level great for conversation.  Great place to relax after an afternoon at Pacific Place (Admiralty).  But the food really wasn't good...I don't even need to come another time "just to make sure."  I would come again for the view, though, but only order a pot of tea.

Buffet lunch at Riva (Park Lane Hotel)

Comfortable surroundings.  Noise level perfect for conversation.  Not a bad spread--Salads, sashimi, smoked fish, several small bites, and six dessert items, plus Haagen Dazs ice cream (many buffets serve Haagen Dazs...).  We each got to pick one main entree (fish, prawns, steak, ribs, or risotto).  The food was okay, but you come for the view...

Roasted pig stuffed with rice

This is no ordinary roasted pig.  It's stuffed with rice!

Hainan chicken rice

It's a Singaporean dish, basically steamed chicken with oily white rice.  And different dipping sauce--ginger and green onion, sweet and spicy sauce, and soy sauce.  Man Wah is supposed to be one of the best places to get this in Hong Kong.  It was good, but I need to try the other places before saying anything else.  Stay tuned.

Chicken egg fruit

I don't even know what it is in English.  Hahahah.  It is a seasonal item.  And the person who let me try it bought it in Yuen Long, which is faaaaaaaar away.  The texture is very much like hard boiled egg yolk...hence the name "chicken egg" fruit.  It's not juicy.  Dense.  Not too sweet.  I'm indifferent.  Glad I got to try something new though.

Rabbit Hole

Before we left for the peak, Nat and I had brunch at Coast.  It was simple but I wanted a western breakfast.  We figured we would sit at the restaurant while we waited for everyone else to arrive, since we both had our phones to entertain ourselves with...candy crush...

But the restaurant got busy and we felt bad just sitting there.  We left and found this coffee house on the third floor of a building--Rabbit Hole.  It is not a big place and has one long table in the middle with stools, and the fancy machines against the wall.  My kind of place!
